One of the greatest country singers ever, Patsy Cline was a pioneer for female singers, making her a new force and an integral part of the Nashville-dominated country music industry. Her final four Top Ten country singles, did not actually make the Top 40, and despite a severe motor-accident in 1961, she remained hot through 1961 and 1962. "Crazy" and "She's Got You" both becoming classic pop and big country hits. Much of her smooth romantic work was supplied by fresh talent like Hank Cochran, Harlan Howard, and Willie Nelson (who penned "Crazy"). Although her commercial momentum had faded slightly, she was still at the top of her game when she sadly died in a plane crash in March of 1963, at the age of only 30. |

Nelson wrote the song Crazy in early1961; at the time when he had written several hits for other artists but had not yet had a noteworthy recording of his own. Cline was already a big singing star who was working to expand a portfolio of hits. Nelson originally wrote the song with country singer Billy Walker, but he turned it down and Cline picked it as a follow up to I Fall To Pieces. Willie had been working the Esquire Ballroom, and afterwards was still so hyped up, wrote it as a Floyd Tellman Special; it took him only 20 minutes. Crazy was released in late 1961 and immediately became another huge hit for Cline, eventually becoming her signature tune, and its success helped launch Nelson as a performer as well as a songwriter. Musically the song is a jazz-pop ballad with country overtones. The complex melody suited Cline's vocal talent perfectly and widened the crossover audience she had established with her prior hits. The lyrics describe the singer's state of bemusement at the singer's own helpless love for the object of his affection. |
