It
will not come as a revelation to too many people that Iraq is not the best place for a
vacation at
the moment. Even
with UN support now and then, the now almost constant threat of military action by the US / UK, equated with a chaotic and extreme domestic
situation in Iraq, makes it one of the
least popular places in the world to be at anytime. Even if you had the opportunity to go, chances are
you would have trouble getting there; there are no commercial carriers running flights to
Baghdad's Saddam the Great, International Airport due to UN restrictions.
Borders with Turkey and
Jordan remain open, but are well guarded and restricted. The violent internal struggle with the
Iraq's Kurdish inhabitants, along with the occasional cross-border conflict between Turkey and rebel Kurds, make many
peripheral areas hazardous. Allied fighter planes patrol Northern and Southern 'no-fly zones', and bomb
selected military areas of the country regularly.
Grave
shortage of food, essential medicine and other services throughout the nation impede the country's
chance of prosperity, however, we must wonder why this country is not providing a better standard
of living for its population, especially as it is so oil-rich.
It
is true that there seems to be somewhat of a fanatical hatred of Saddam Hussein by some of the
West and this has brought on various sanctions and the resultant poverty. Though some would
say that it is Hussein that keeps his people poor and then blames it on the West. The only TV and
Radio is under political control from the Hussein regime. It broadcasts a constant stream of
propaganda, telling the Iraqis how great Saddam Hussein is. But they are not convinced, the average
Iraqi is not stupid and hates Hussein and all he stands for. He is know colloquially as " The
Donkey"
But
if it is true that he supports and sponsors terrorism against the West.
If
it is true that he is developing instruments of mass destruction.
If
it is true that he has murdered many thousands of Iraqis for religious, political and racial
reasons.
If
it is true that he is a dictator; a despotic leader and one who has made democracy a crime.
If
it is true that diplomacy has been totally unproductive. Then why not be very wary of what his
true intentions are.
Of
course if he is none of these things, then we should leave him alone. Especially when the Iraqi
people are portrayed in a manner that they adore and worship him in an almost god-like way, giving a mandate to his ever increasing
bravado and criminal actions.
Is
it not ironic, that as part of the civilized world we are being fed terrible and wicked propaganda
by the Bush & Blair regime.
Or
is it not ironic that the Iraqis
supposedly love Hussein with a passion, but
the majority of Americans hate and mock Bush. And the British accuse Blair of always looking like
a rabbit caught in headlights.
So
understanding all this as if it was not irony, would we not all be happier living under a Hussein led
regime, or one, identical to what most of the
West has.
The choice is yours. It should be then, that those Westerners,
like the anti-war protestors, who do support Saddam Hussein
and his administration, should lobby the appropriate houses of representation, to change the
West to the same form of government as Iraq.
